Back in 2016, we were able to freeze the UPass cost at $50 a month. UW proposed increasing it to $72.50 a month, but 3,000 people signed a petition, and we held a rally out at the light rail station on campus. Our work together made UW freeze the UPass cost for 2 years.
Free transit benefits are already a standard best practice for major institutions throughout the Seattle area. For example, King County, the City of Seattle, Swedish Hospital, Microsoft, and Seattle Children’s Hospital all provide free transit benefits for their employees.
Unfortunately, the University of Washington lags far behind its peers in employee transit benefits, with negative consequences for congestion, for the climate, and of the quality of employees' lives.
The traffic problem will only get worse when the UW Seattle Campus expands, growing its population by 13,000 people during the next 10 years.
