Who is the SEIU Local 925 Higher Education Faculty Chapter?
We are University of Washington faculty committed to quality education for all students, affordable access to higher education, excellence in research and scholarship, and fairness for all faculty. We work collaboratively to address urgent issues like increased state funding, representation on the Board of Regents, fair treatment for Lecturers, and increasing racial and gender equity. We believe we can help steer higher education in the right direction if we act collectively, as members of our union. We hope you’ll join us in preserving the mission of higher education!
Why Become A Member?
As members of SEIU 925, we are building a higher education labor movement. We join colleagues around the nation who are standing up for the values of academic freedom and shared governance. Once considered middle class employment, many university faculty now work part-time for low pay and little job security, few benefits or even office space. Researchers struggle to obtain funding from shrinking sources. Students are saddled with crushing debt that could take a lifetime to pay off. Like many other universities, the University of Washington is shifting investment away from educators and affordable higher education toward a burgeoning class of administrators, funder-driven research priorities, and lavish real estate development projects on and off campus.
The crisis in higher education has given rise to dozens of faculty organizing campaigns across the country, including at prestigious institutions like the University of Chicago, Duke University, Boston University and the University of Minnesota. These campaigns, some involving contingent faculty and others including tenure-line and research faculty, are forcing an unprecedented national discussion over the corporatization of higher education, and what it means for faculty, students and society as a whole. As faculty at the University of Washington, we are excited to join this movement for positive change.
What Does “Becoming A Member” mean?
Any faculty member at the University of Washington can become a voluntary, voting member of our faculty union, a chapter of SEIU 925. When you join, you will be supporting the faculty union movement with a financial contribution. You will have access to union resources to organize around issues that matter to you and your colleagues on your campus. You will also have access to member benefits like discounts on cell phone bills, entertainment and travel, and insurance.
In addition, you’ll automatically become a member of the Faculty Forward Network, a national organization that brings full- and part-time, tenure-track and non-tenured faculty together to confront the crisis in higher education. The Faculty Forward Network also offers a growing list of exclusive member benefits.
All members voluntarily pay union dues relative to their annual salary, ranging from $10 to $25 per month. As members, we also vote to elect chapter officers, decide on the direction and actions our chapter will take, and amend or adjust chapter bylaws. Members of the Higher Education Faculty Chapter also have full membership rights in SEIU Local 925.
You can also endorse the union without becoming a paid member. We need about a third of the faculty to sign a card to the Washington State Public Employment Relations Commission calling for a vote on whether Faculty Forward should represent the UW faculty in collective bargaining. With your signature of support, we will build towards that goal. Simply download the union card, fill it in (without a pledge of financial support), sign it, and either mail it or PDF it with your signature back to us.
